Less than two weeks after Portsmouth, New Hampshire police opened an investigation into at least 17 incidents of antisemitic and hateful graffiti found downtown on a synagogue, homes and businesses, local police are looking into another act of offensive graffiti discovered on Friday morning, according to the StopAntisemitism organization.
Police announced that they were contacted Friday at 9 a.m. about the graffiti, which was found on a pedestrian foot bridge.
The new graffiti contained antisemitic and white supremacist ideology, they added. Photos showed a Star of David in red pray paint next to an antisemitic slur, and an “X” alongside the phrase “White Lives Matter.”
The first graffiti spree was reported on February 21, and consisted of at least 10 swastikas and other extremist messages spray painted in red on a synagogue, and on homes and local shops.
Detective Sgt. Kevin McCarthy told Seacoastonline that the new graffiti is being added to the original investigation.
But police are not sure if the pedestrian bridge vandalism has any ties to the downtown graffiti from February.
“The Portsmouth Police Department would like to speak with anyone who has utilized the footbridge to develop the best information on when this tagging may have occurred,” the department said in a statement.
