Justice Minister Yariv Levin expressed his opposition to stopping judicial reform legislation to political figures and explained his approach by warning that a legislation freeze would cause the government to collapse.
According to Ulpan Shishi, Levin explained, “Freezing legislation would mean frittering away the reform and burying it from here, the road to breaking up the government will be paved, not immediately, but as a process.”
UTJ is demanding the clause to override a Supreme Court veto. Shas wants a second “Deri Law”, which would prevent the Supreme Court from passing judgment on ministerial appointments. Religious Zionism won’t agree to stop the reform. “Governments fall when their’ partners begin to be disappointed,” explained Levin.
Levin’s planned judicial reform has been a point of tension among the Israeli public. President Isaac Herzog suggested halting the legislation process until a compromise is made between the sides, but many on both sides object to such a compromise.
